HANGING WITH FRANK McCUE (PRISON DEATH WATCH OFFICER)

An award-winning documentary from 1998, Hanging with Frank, details the final moments of the men condemned to death in the Hanging Shed.

It features Frank McCue – a former Barlinnie death watch officer, who kept an eye on the condemned men.

This was a 24-hour-a-day job shared by three shifts, who sat in the condemned man’s cell drinking tea as they waited for the footsteps of the hangman.

The victim and warders with him usually did not notice when the executioner spied on them through a secret window to make sure his calculations on the length of rope required were correct.

There was an official table to refer to, which equated the victim’s weight to the length of the rope required, but most executioners liked to have a look at the shape of the man taking the drop, just to make sure.
